Harinera - Deers-The poem and its translation-Jibananda Das

হরিণেরা; রূপালি চাঁদের হাত শিশিরে পাতায়;

পল্লবের ফাঁকে ফাঁকে-বনে বনে-হরিণের চোখে;

বিলুপ্ত ধূসর কোন পৃথিবীর শেফালিকা আহা;

Translation

In dreamland - in autumn moonlight, I guess
I saw it in the forests of Flame of forest, it plays.

Those deers, when the silver moon caresses dew on leaves
Winds flap its wings - pearls (dew) sleets.

Through gaps of leaves of words and falls onto eyes of deer
While the deers play lustrously among pearls and air.

As if lighting a diamond lamp smiles Shefalika Bose
Among the skies behind oak trees of forests numerous.

Shefali belongs to some archaic-dull world so.
This only the deers of autumn moonlight know.

Winds flap its wings, diamonds shower in eyes of deer
Deers play with lustrous lights of diamonds and air.

The poem & The Translation - Twenty years hence

If ever I meet her after twenty years from today
After twenty long years
Maybe besides some fields of paddy
In a month of winter
When the crows of dusk return - the waters yellow
Becomes soft & softer, with Catkins, Bulrush and reed - in fields of paddy.

Or, there is no paddy field any more,
There may not be bustle either
Hay from duck's nest
Hay from bird's nest
Spreading everywhere;
Cleansing Monia's dark nest with cold dewdrops.

Our lives have passed for twenty years-a score time
Then, suddenly on some dusty path we meet one more time.

Maybe the moon appears at midnight behind a screen of leaves
Slim-thin, black-dark branches cover her face
Either of raintrees or of roseapples,
Tamarisks - Mangoes;
You don't remember anymore after twenty years.

Our lives have passed for twenty years-a score time
Then, suddenly on some dusty path we meet one more time.

Maybe then the owl descends on fields crawling on its knees-
In hideous alleys of acasia,
In cracked windows of Ficus religiosa;
Where shall I hide you.
From the kite who dips silently alike the eyelids which dips down.

Brilliant-golden hawk-the dew have already hunted and taken it away
After twenty years from that mist may I find you totally unaware.

Rupashi Bangla - The poem, the lyrics & the translation

জাম — বট — কাঠালের — হিজলের — অশখের করে আছে চুপ;
ফণীমনসার ঝোপে শটিবনে তাহাদের ছায়া পড়িয়াছে;

I saw the face of Bengal, so the world's beauty
I need not find anymore: Waking up at night on the Dumara tree
Sits under a big leaf alike under an umbrella is what I see
A Doyel bird of dawn-I see all around a heap of leaves
Of silent Blackberries - Banyan - Jackfruits - Hijoltrees - Asokatrees.
Her shadows are cast in dense bushes of wild turmeric and prickly pears
From a lover's boat it falls from moon on Magnolia, I know not how it so appears.
Thus decked with blue shadows of Hijol - Banyan - Mangosteens is Bengal's awesome beauty.

So watched Behula once floating on a raft in waters of a river.
When on twelfth day of dark fortnight's moonlight fades in sand dunes of river.
When besides golden harvest stands dense Banyan-Pipul trees, ahh
She heard soft tweets of a blackbird - Once in heaven
She danced feverishly in the court of Indra alike torn bells.
The rivers of Bengal, its fields & forest flowers cried on her feet like tinkerbells.

Abar ashibo phire - The poem, the lyrics and the translation

Shall resurrect and return again to the banks of river Dhansiri in this Bengal.
If not as human, then as conch-necked kite or a common myna fowl.
Maybe as a crow of dawn that flies in fields of new harvest of early winter fall.
Shall float on heart of frosts to under a shade of a Jackfruit tree diurnal.
Wearing tinkerbells of young girl in my feet; may be, I shall be a duck fowl.
Gliding, floating in fragrant waters of Water lilies-spending a day total .
Will come again for the love of the rivers, fields, pastures of Bengal.
On melancholy green banks moist with waves of river Jalangi of this very Bengal.

Maybe you'll see me as a bird drifting in dusky airflow.
Maybe on a silk cotton tree you'll hear me as a spotted owl.
Maybe as a kid spreading puffed rice on front lawns feeding fowl.
As a young man adrift in muddy waters of Rupsa lofts a torn white sail
Wafting a raft - as crimson clouds swims and fade into oblivion
Maybe you'll see me as a white crane; you'll find me in such obscure form.
